General Birdwatching Tour in Klabili village of Tambrauw Regency

I have just returned from a 4 day-3 night birdwatching and sightseeing tour covering two beautiful places in Papua Barat Daya Province of Indonesa. They were Sausapor town and Klabili village of Tambrauw regency. We started from Sorong city on Day 1. I guided a couple from the Netherlands.

Eastern Hooded Pitta

We went there by a chartered 4WD car. It took around 4 hours to reach Sausapor town. After checking into our rooms, we continued our activity by doing general birding at the outskirt of Sausapor town. There are several interesting birdwatching sites in Sausapor that we visited. We stayed at Sansapore Pacific Park. It is a beach resort. At the outskirt of Sausapor town, we saw a lot of species of birds including Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Palm Cockatoo, Blyth's Hornbill, Brown Oriole, Red-cheeked Parrot, Helmetted Friarbird, Sacred Kingfisher, Hooded Butcherbird, Coconut Lorikeet, Black-capped Lory, Frilled Monarch, Rainbow Bee-eater, Yellow-faced Myna, Glossy-mantled Manucode, Willy Wagtail, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, and a lot more.

Because the resort had its own beach with coral reef, visitors could enjoy snorkeling. There are colorful flowers that grow in the resort including Red Hibiscus, Zinnia, Beach Hibiscus, Passion Flower, and Dendrobium Orchid. The flowers attracted various species of butterflies including Ulysses, Cruiser, Great Eggfly and Taenaris butterflies. Sansapore Pacific Park Beach Resort is a recommended base for butterfly watching trips in Sausapor town of Tambrauw regency.

On the third day, we continued our trip to Klabili village. There, they watched more interesting birds including: Hooded Pitta, Papuan Pitta, Lesser Birds of Paradise, King Bird of Paradise, Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise, Red-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Rufous-bellied Kookaburra, Torresian Crow, Palm Cockatoo, Hooded Pitta, Western-crowned Pigeon, Oriental Dollarbird, and etc.

While sitting at the verandah of Klabili homestay, we saw a female cassowary entered the frontyard.

Nightwalk was also organized during the tour. The forest in Sausapor and Klabili is the natural habitat of monitor lizard, snakes, bandicoot, cuscus, and nocturnal birds.

When we arrived in Sorong city, we had a short visit to Mangrove forest to find Orange-breasted Fig Parrot, Orange-fronted Fig Parrot and other birds.

After the tour, they continued their trip to Raja Ampat.

Scarlet Jade Vine Flowers in Manokwari forest

Scarlet Jade Vine
Scarlet Jade Vine
This is the photograph of Scarlet Jade Vine (Mucuna bennetti) flowers that I see in the lowland forest of Manokwari. It is also called New Guinea creeper. The plant climbs trees that grow near the river to get enough sunlight and water. Huge number of red flowers bloom from the solid stems and twigs of the liana vines that are "wrapping" their parent trees.
The massive number of flowers in the trees creates an impression as if they are burning in flames. There are also other species of tropical flowers that we can see in the lowland forest of Manokwari if we go hiking, camping, birding and wildlife watching.
One of them is Blue Trumpet Vine (Thunbergia grandiflora) flowers that hang on big trees in the forest edges. Their petals are blue and yellowish white in their center hole.

These vine flowers need a lot of light to grow. That's why they cannot grow under the canopy of the forest. They can be found growing in the the forest edges along the rivers or in the forest that have got some open areas.

Rainforest Flowers in Mesirrokow River of Manokwari

Terrestrial Orchid "Yellow Crown"
 in Lowland Forest of Manokwari
I organize hiking, camping and wildlife watching tours in the rainforest of Mesirrokow in Manokwari regency. Visitors who book the tours go there to watch birds. But there are also tourists who are interested in seeing tropical flowers as well.
An Ideal Site for Flowers to Grow
The wide open space that is created by rivers in Mesirrokow forest is an ideal site for a lot of species of wild flowers to grow. There is enough sunlight, and abundant water as well as shades provided by large trees that grow on both sides of the river.
Four Yellow Petal Flower in Manokwari Lowland Forest
Every time I visit Mesirrokow forest, I always spend time in looking for beautiful and colorful flowers. When I see them I take pictures for documentation and identification purposes. There is a blue-yellow terrestrial orchids that grows under the shades of big trees near the footpath where tourists, hunters, and farmers walk through. I still don't know its scientific/ latin name. Its leaves are slender and long and have got dark green color.
There is also yellow flower that grows on the side of the river whose soil consists of a lot of gravel and sand. But the flower plant looks so healthy. I still cannot identify it. Tropical flowers in lowland forest of Mesirrokow grow well and are pollinated by bees, other insects and birds.

Flowers in the River-Forest of Manokwari

Flowers in the Mesirrokow river-forest
While I was guiding two Swiss tourists along the banks of Mesirrokow river-forest, I saw some interesting flowers. Some of them were New Guinea tulip (also called spathodea), eichhornia and other species that I don't know their names. In my previous hiking trips in the same region, I saw Faradaya splendida glory vine flowers, Thunbergia grandiflora and Ipomoea morning glory. Flowers like to grow near the river because they need water to survive. Mesirrokow river is located in the northwest of Manokwari, approximately 50 kilometers from the city.

Hiking and Birdwatching
In addition to flowers, the forest edges along the Mesirrokow river of Manokwari was an ideal site for hiking and birdwatching. With 2 good pairs of binoculars, we were able to see a lot of Papuan Blyth's hornbills, and Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita). Mesirrokow river was also a place where I was able to see and take picture of Large-tailed Nightjar (Caprimulgus mucrurus). I also took some good pictures of Willie Wagtail and Little Ringed Plover.

With my Fujifilm HS50EXR, I could shoot Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) that was hovering in the sky above the trees in search of fish and other prey.

Camping
I spent 3 days/ 2 nights camping and hiking in the banks of Mesirrokow river to see its beautiful scenery and explore the wealth of its bio-diversity.
