Raja Ampat is famous around the world as a paradise for diving and snorkeling, but there is much more to discover here. I spent three unforgettable days on Waigeo Island, staying at a small beachfront guesthouse run by a local Papuan family. The location was beautiful, with stunning views of the sea, and we enjoyed delicious local food prepared by the family.
My guide, Charles Roring, chose this place because, besides snorkeling, it offered a special opportunity to see the Red Bird-of-Paradise in its natural habitat.

Watching the Red Bird-of-Paradise
To see these beautiful birds, you have to wake up early. We left the guesthouse at around 6:00 AM, while it was still dark. The hike to the observation point took about 45 minutes. It was quite challenging because the trail was steep and sometimes difficult to walk on.
But the effort was absolutely worth it.
When we reached the observation point, we could already hear the birds calling from the trees. We had to wait patiently before they appeared, and for a while I wondered if we would actually see them.
Then, suddenly, the birds arrived.
We had the amazing opportunity to watch their beautiful courtship dance from close by. It was a truly unforgettable experience. The spectacular display lasted for about 90 minutes before the birds disappeared back into the jungle.
After the hike back to the guesthouse, I enjoyed a wonderful massage. It was exactly what I needed after the challenging walk and helped relax my tired muscles.
Exploring the Uninhabited Islands
Another memorable experience was a boat trip around the uninhabited islands of Raja Ampat. The scenery was incredibly beautiful and felt completely untouched. Along the way, we spotted several species of birds and enjoyed the peaceful surroundings.
The trip lasted about four to five hours, but the time passed so quickly that I hardly noticed how long we had been on the water.

Discovering the Underwater World
Of course, no trip to Raja Ampat would be complete without exploring its incredible underwater world.
As soon as I put my head underwater, I was amazed by what I could see. Beautiful coral reefs were surrounded by colorful fish of different shapes and sizes. The marine life was incredibly rich, and every snorkeling trip felt like entering another world.
If you plan to dive or snorkel in Raja Ampat, I recommend bringing your own mask, snorkel, fins, and underwater camera.
When to Visit Raja Ampat
The recommended period for diving and snorkeling is October to June, when sea conditions are generally calmer and you can enjoy the water more comfortably.
If you visit between July and September, the sea can be rougher, but there are still plenty of things to enjoy. You can swim near your guesthouse, explore the beautiful scenery, take sightseeing trips, and visit the spectacular karst islands.
Overall, I had a wonderful time exploring Raja Ampat and the rainforests of Tambrauw. The combination of beautiful islands, wildlife, rainforest, local culture, and incredible marine life made this a very special journey.
