Wildlife Watching in Klalik Village of Sorong Regency

Introduction

Klalik is a small village in District Klasow of Sorong regency. It is a good destination for visitors who are interested in wildlife watching (birds, insects, mammals and reptiles). It takes around 2 hours to reach the village.

Cost includes: Local guide, food and drinking water, cooks, accommodation at the village homestay (basic accommodation), local birdwatching guide, village fees.
Cost does not include: airfare, hotel accommodation in Sorong City before and after the tour, travel insurance, and other personal expenses.

ITINERARY

Day 1. Sorong City – Klalik Village

A local guide will pick you up in Sorong and then arrange your transportation from Sorong City to Klalik Village by 4WD. The journey takes approximately 2 hours, covering a distance of 82 km.

Arriving at the village, you can observe birds and wildlife around the village. At 2:30 PM, begin a walk into the forest in front of the village to observe Red-Brested Paradise Kingfisher, Blue Black Kingfisher, Papuan Pitta, Hooded Pitta, and Yellow-capped Pygmy Parrot.

We will stay until 5:00 PM. Return to the village, have dinner, and rest. Dinner at 8:00 PM, followed by a guided tour of mammals, reptiles, and nocturnal birds.

Day 2: Klalik Village

Wake up early at 4:00 AM. Enjoy tea or coffee and some biscuits. At 4:30 AM, local guides will lead you on a 3-hour, 4-km forest walk to the observation site of Greater Melampitta and Magnificent Riflebird. After watching the birds, you can continue walking to the boardwalk area to watch the birds. General birdwatching: Birds that you can see include: Blyth's Hornbill, Red-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Blue-black Kingfisher, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Lowland Peltop, Northern Fantail, Wompoo Fruit Dove, Beautiful Fruit-dove, Eclectus Lory, Orange-bellied Fruit Dove, Moustached Treeswift, Golden Myna, Zoe's Emperial Pigeon, and etc.

After lunch, birdwatch in the forest behind the village along the riverbank.

Birds you can see include Papuan Babbler, Spangled Drongo, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, and Hooded Pitta. In the evening, you can do a short birdwatching tour to look for Papuan Frogmouth, Rufous Owls, Marbled Frogmouth, and other birds sleeping in the lower branches, or other animals such as cuscuses and fruit bats.

Day 3: Klalik – Sorong City

Wake up at 4:30 AM, accompanied by local guides, and observe the Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise until around 9:00 AM. There are also Pink-spotted Fruit Doves, Northern Fantails, Large Fig Parrots, Brown Orioles, and etc. Return to your homestay around 9:00 AM. Pack-up your things. Have some food. At 10:00 AM, depart Klabili Village for Sorong City by 4WD. The tour is finished.
